New-gen powertrains from Toyota, Subaru and Mazda are crafted for electrification, boasting a compact design and versatility to accommodate a range of alternative fuels

Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda have announced together the development of a new generation of clean and efficient ICE powertrains. Instead of collaborating on a single series of engines, each automaker will focus on its own type of powertrain, while sharing technological advancements. It comes on the back of slowdown in electric vehicle sales in the international markets.

Despite revealing ambitious electrification plans in recent past, Toyota has been on the back foot in terms of developing new age EVs compared to its European, American and Korean rivals. According to the Japanese trio, the new-gen powertrains are crafted for electrification, boasting a compact design and versatility to accommodate a range of alternative fuels.

The firms will enhance the integration of electric drive units into their individual powertrains, paving the way for a new era of hybrids. They aim to attain carbon neutrality by transitioning from fossil fuels and embracing alternative solutions such as biofuels and liquid hydrogen, which have already undergone testing in various environments including on racetracks.

Each brand will take advantage of their strengths in developing powertrains. For instance, Subaru is renowned for its boxer engines and Mazda for its rotary powertrains. Subaru will focus on a new-gen boxer engine, Toyota an inline-four, and a rotary unit will be developed by Mazda tailored to the needs of their varied customer demographics.

These engines are touted as highly efficient and potent, determined to deliver enhanced performance according to the brands. Additionally, they will be more compact, enabling future models to feature lower hoods and improved overall aerodynamics. Furthermore, engineers will ensure that the engines will stick by the ever-demanding emission regulations across different markets.
