Internally codenamed Y43, the Maruti Suzuki micro SUV will rival the likes of Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter; India launch in 2026-2027
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the largest car manufacturer in the country is currently riding the SUV wave. With its latest launches like the Grand Vitara, Fronx, New Brezza and Jimny in the last two years, the home-grown carmaker commands a decent proportion of the overall SUV market. In order to continue its growth trajectory, multiple new SUVs are in the pipeline and expected to launch in the coming years.
These upcoming SUVs will open the gates of new segments for Maruti Suzuki, thereby capturing a larger market share. For reference, the company has over 20% market share in the utility vehicle segment. Amongst the upcoming sports utility vehicles, a micro-SUV which will rival the likes of Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter is currently under development.
As per the latest media reports, the micro-SUV is due for a launch in the Indian market sometime in the year 2026-2027. The new micro-SUV will be positioned below the Brezza in the brand’s line-up. While the high-riding hatchbacks like the S-Presso and Ignis are currently doing the duty in the micro-SUV segment, a proper SUV with a butch stance much like the rivals in the segment is the need of the hour.

While the details about Maruti’s new project are scarce at the moment, we expect it to measure below 4 meters in length. A high ground clearance, commanding diving position and proper SUVish stance will be some of the major aspects that the Japanese carmaker will be targeting with its upcoming micro-SUV.
Talking about the design, we can expect something on the like of the company’s latest crop of SUVs including the Grand Vitara and Fronx. Inside the cabin, part sharing will be the name of the game with features like a large touchscreen infotainment system, flat-bottom steering wheel, six airbags, head-up display, automatic HVAC and push-button start/stop amongst others.

We expect the upcoming Y43 micro-SUV to draw power from the 1.2-litre Z-Series mild-hybrid petrol engine which will soon debut in the new-gen Swift, paired with the option of a manual as well as an automatic gearbox. In addition to this, Maruti Suzuki is also preparing to launch its first electric car, the eVX and Grand Vitara-based Y17 7-seater SUV.
