Mikel Arteta, head coach of Premier League side Arsenal, who are set to finish trophyless for a fifth year on the bounce, asserted that the Londoners need to be ruthless in the upcoming transfer window to add more firepower to a team that has managed to challenge for the English top-flight crown, only to end up second best for a third season running.

“If you want to win major trophies, you have to be the best in the market, no?” Arteta began.

“The teams that win always have the best players,” the Spaniard said.

“I wouldn’t like to name a player, but there is pride because we have brought the club into a position that next season people are saying: ‘You have to win a major trophy.’ And that means that everybody believes, and that we are an elite team in this country and in Europe,” the 43-year-old explained.

“The biggest statement is that Arsenal is there,” he beamed.

Arteta’s men were plagued by injuries that ravaged the season of stars including Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, in addition to the lack of an natural number 9, who would guarentee goals up front.

“What is clear with the amount of injuries that we had in the front line is that we need a goal threat and we need firepower. Understanding that the context can change tomorrow, we cannot rely just on the numbers that we had before,” the former Arsenal midfielder elucidated.

“We have to add goals, creativity, and we have to add numbers, and that will be in different positions,” the Arsenal boss stated.

Arteta also hopes for a contract extension deal for midfielder Thomas Partey, who has been a crucial cog in the Arsenal machine.

“In regards to Thomas, consistency-wise, it’s been his best season. The way he’s played, performed, and his availability has been exceptional. He is a really important player for us,” Arteta highlighted.

Arseal also had to endure the sight of local rivals Tottenham get their hands on the UEFA Europa League with a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Thursday to put an end to a 17-year-title drought.

“They are champions, and when you get to that, you have to do a lot of things right,” the Spaniard said.

“I think they have gone through a season with again a lot of obstacles and difficulties and they have helped them at the end to manage a beautiful moment,” he concluded.
