Jichang Garden, the epitome of classical Chinese garden design

Jichang Garden is a classical Chinese garden located in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, east China. It is one of the representative works of Jiangnan gardens. The lush greenery and mountain streams make Jichang Garden a perfect retreat from the summer heat.

Built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, Jichang Garden is a fine example of the traditional Chinese garden design technique known as “borrowed scenery,” which incorporates views from outside the garden into the composition of the garden.

The distant views of the lushly vegetated Huishan Mountain and its mountaintop pavilion can be seen from the garden and are reflected in the garden’s ponds.

As a renowned garden, Jichang has been visited and favored by many distinguished guests over the centuries. The Kangxi and Qianlong Emperors of the Qing Dynasty had stopovers there several times on their way to southern China.
